A pelvic ultrasound is the foundational diagnostic tool for female reproductive health. Whether you have been referred by your GP for specific symptoms or are seeking a routine check, this scan provides high-resolution, real-time images of your pelvic anatomy.
Common Reasons for Referral:
Investigating unexplained pelvic pain or cramping.
Evaluating heavy, irregular, or absent menstrual bleeding.
Checking for ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, or polyps.
Locating a misplaced IUD (Intrauterine Device).
Post-menopausal bleeding investigations.
A standard pelvic assessment usually requires two parts. First, a transabdominal scan is performed across your lower abdomen. You will need to arrive with a full bladder (drink 1 litre of water an hour before your appointment) to lift the uterus for clear viewing. Following this, you will be asked to empty your bladder for a transvaginal scan. This involves a slender, lubricated ultrasound probe being gently inserted into the vagina, providing the highest quality, magnified images of your pelvic organs.
While highly recommended for the clearest imaging, it is entirely optional and only performed with your explicit consent.
Please allow 30 minutes for a complete pelvic ultrasound appointment.
