In the third trimester (usually requested after 28 weeks), the focus shifts from structural anatomy to fetal growth and environmental well-being. These scans are often recommended if your fundal height (bump measurement) is measuring large or small, or if you have gestational diabetes or high blood pressure.
Key Assessments in the Third Trimester:
Estimated Fetal Weight (EFW): We measure the baby’s head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length to plot their growth on a personalized percentile chart.
Fetal Presentation: Confirming whether the baby is cephalic (head-down), breech, or transverse as you near delivery.
Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI): Measuring the volume of fluid around the baby to ensure it is within a safe range.
Doppler Studies: Using specialized color ultrasound to measure the resistance of blood flow in the umbilical cord and the baby’s brain (Middle Cerebral Artery). This tells us how efficiently the placenta is delivering oxygen and nutrients.
Yes, if the baby’s position allows for clear imaging, we love to provide 3D images of your baby’s face during this scan.
No, a full bladder is not required for third-trimester scans.
