Saline Infusion Sonohysterography (SIS)

A minimally invasive, highly detailed evaluation of the uterine lining to investigate abnormal bleeding and fertility challenges.

Uncovering the Details of the Uterine Cavity

A mixed-media medical illustration showing the Saline Sonography procedure. On the left, a woman reclines while receiving an abdominal ultrasound. Swirling blue water graphics and deep purple petal shapes with face silhouettes flow from the ultrasound wand toward the center. The center features a large cross-section drawing of a uterus. A thin catheter tube is inserted through the cervix, releasing blue fluid that expands the inner uterine cavity, revealing a round growth inside. Two small inset diagrams below show the uterus before fluid insertion and after. On the right, an ultrasound monitor and two printed ultrasound photographs show a black, fluid-filled uterine cavity containing a bright white growth. The background features textured, painterly brushstrokes in warm cream and green tones.

Standard ultrasounds can measure the thickness of the uterine lining (endometrium), but they cannot always see small abnormalities hidden within the cavity walls. Saline Sonography (SIS) gently separates the walls of the uterus, acting as an acoustic window that highlights internal structures with exceptional clarity.

When is an SIS Recommended?

  • Investigating the cause of heavy or irregular periods.

  • Diagnosing endometrial polyps or submucosal fibroids.

  • Assessing the uterine cavity prior to IVF treatment.

  • Evaluating congenital uterine anomalies (e.g., septate uterus).

What to Expect During the Procedure:

The SIS procedure is performed in our clinic and takes about 30 minutes. After a baseline transvaginal scan, a very thin, flexible catheter is passed through the cervix. A small amount of sterile saline is introduced to gently expand the uterine cavity while the ultrasound records the images.

Post-Procedure Care:

You may experience mild cramping, similar to period pain, during and shortly after the procedure. Over-the-counter pain relief taken an hour before your appointment can help. Light spotting for a day or two is normal.
