Early Pregnancy & Viability Scans

Your first glimpse of your baby. We provide compassionate, accurate early pregnancy dating and viability assessments from 6 weeks onward.

Reassurance When You Need It Most

A mixed-media painting and drawing of a woman in a clinical setting receiving an abdominal ultrasound. From the ultrasound probe, abstract purple petal shapes and flowing lines swirl toward the center. In the center is a drawing of a heart shape containing a small fetus. A jagged heartbeat line extends from the heart to a computer monitor on the right. The monitor displays a black-and-white ultrasound image of an early pregnancy, overlaid with small circular graphic icons showing a heart rate and a sprouting plant. The background features a window looking out onto a garden, and three decorative vases on a sill.

The first trimester can be an anxious time. An early pregnancy scan (typically performed between 6 and 10 weeks) is designed to provide you and your healthcare provider with crucial information about the foundation of your pregnancy.

What We Look For:

  • Confirmation: Verifying the pregnancy is safely located within the uterus (ruling out ectopic pregnancy).

  • Viability: Detecting and measuring the fetal heartbeat.

  • Dating: Accurately measuring the embryo (Crown-Rump Length) to calculate your Estimated Due Date (EDD).

  • Multiples: Determining if you are carrying twins or more.

How to Prepare:

Please attend this appointment with a full bladder. We will attempt to perform the scan transabdominally first. However, before 8 weeks, the embryo is incredibly small (the size of a grain of rice or a blueberry). If we cannot see clearly, we will offer a transvaginal scan, which is perfectly safe for the baby and provides the high-resolution detail needed at this early stage.
